We understand what is important to concrete repair contractors. Bridge deck repair is necessary to keep our nation’s roadway system in service. We have developed the Fast Track Selective Hydro-Demolition Bridge Deck Overlay Method, which is used by many Highway Departments and Contractors, as the fastest and longest maintenance free construction method to repair and preserve bridge decks. The service life of bridge decks are extended by 25-30 years when this method is used with minimum disruption to traffic.

Owner Benefits

The major #1 risk to an owner when putting out a bid for a bridge deck preservation or rehabilitation project are variable quantities.

Variable quantities cause all sorts of problems such as:

a. Uncontrollable costs.
b. Extended time of completion.
c. More money required to complete.
d. Change orders.
e. Litigation.
f. Contractors not bidding apples to apples.
g. Unbalancing of bids, etc.

Basically performing work totally out of control in terms of problems and money.

The benefit to owner or consultants using Fast Track Selective Hydro-Demolition is the ability to eliminate or reduce variable quantities.

Other Owner Benefits of using Fast Track Selective Hydro-Demolition to prepare bridge decks are:

  1. High quality – long term structure relief.
  2. No dust.
  3. No vibration.
  4. No bond interface damage.
  5. No micro cracking.
  6. Removes unsound concrete or identifies where more work is required.
  7. Highly rough and bondable surface for placement of concrete overlay.
  8. Contractors bid on same fix cost items that ensures best possible cost to owners.
  9. No variable quantities. (there are fixed costs variable quantities)
  10. No impact tools that create further damage to bridge additional costs. No bond interface damage.
  11. Chain dragging is not required by owner or contractor to locate unsound concrete.
  12. Owner and contractor are not required to measure variable areas.
  13. Reduction in job administrative costs for owner and contractor. Hydro-demolition unit replaces 60 laborers on jackhammers. The labor is gone!
  14. Reduction in certified payroll.
  15. Reduction in worker’s compensation claims.
  16. Improvement in safety.
  17. Savings for local businesses due to fast completion on contrast to be completed with Jackhammers.

With jackhammers, labor and variable quantities, the owner receives the exact opposite of the 17 listed benefits above.

NOTE: There is no such thing as pour ready when using Deep Hydro-demolition. As soon as the surface dries there is a concrete dust, which can be a bond breaker. After Deep Hydro-demolition, the surface must be sandblasted or water blasted with 7,500 PSI capability to remove all laitance before the new concrete overlay is installed.

With Deep Hydro-demolition below the top matt of reinforcing steel an owner can experience the following:

a) Deep Hydro-demolition is more expensive than FAST TRACK Selective Hydro-Demolition
b) Blowthrough’s are more common with Deep Hydro-demolition.
c) Completion Times are much longer with Deep Hydro-demolition than FAST TRACK Selective Hydro-Demolition, which is extremely fast.
d) Claims and Change Orders can come into play with Deep Hydro-demolition if not specified correctly.
e) Much more water is used with Deep hydro-demolition versus FAST TRACK Selective Hydro-Demolition.
f) Clean up is more expense with Deep hydro-demolition.
g) Deep hydro-demolition should be viewed as an alternative to remove a bridge completely leaving the last 2″-4″ of existing deck as a form and saving all resteel.
